What is a misdemeanor and why would you need a misdemeanor lawyer? The legal definition of a misdemeanor is “a minor crime (as opposed to a felony) which is punishable by fine or imprisonment in a city or county jail rather than in a state penitentiary.” The sentence for many misdemeanors is in the form of a monetary fine.

Some examples of misdemeanors are prostitution, simple assault, trespassing, petty theft, DUI, vandalism, and disorderly conduct. Therefore it is in your best interest to hire a misdemeanor lawyer who is experienced in fighting misdemeanor charges, as opposed to a drug attorney who has no experience beyond arguing drug cases.

A misdemeanor charge and conviction does not usually result in you losing your civil rights but may result in the loss of certain privileges such as public employment, professional licenses, and/or public office.

In the United States the maximum incarceration period is 12 months, with time served in a local jail. Those who are convicted are most often punished with community service, part time imprisonment, meaning their time is served on weekends, or probation.

Finding a misdemeanor lawyer to represent your case is no different than if you were being faced with any other charge. You want a lawyer who is experienced in dealing with cases such as yours and who will fight for your rights to the best of his/her ability. Find a lawyer who will answer your questions and any concern you may have. When it comes to your future, don’t settle for anything less.
