White collar crimes typically refer to financial crimes related to businesses. Since the crimes often violate federal law they are usually charged in a federal court. White collar lawyers are such that since they specialize in that particular field they are your best defense. The penalties for white collar crimes often include jail time, forfeiture, fines, home detention, restitution, or supervised release.

Before you hire any white collar lawyer to represent you there are a few things you need to consider.

  • Does the lawyer specialize in white collar crimes? This is very important because if a lawyer isn’t familiar with white collar crimes, the punishments, or how the courts handle them how will he/she be able to successfully defend you.
  • Don't be afraid to ask the lawyer tough questions about his/her past cases. How many wins and how many losses, ect. Since it is your future at stake you have a right to know if your lawyer has been successful in the past.
  • Ask people you know if they have heard of the lawyer and what their opinion is. As well as contact the bar association to see what their standing is.

Keep in mind that the good lawyers are always busy so don’t be discouraged if you can’t get in to see them right away. This is not necessarily a bad thing.

Handling a white collar crime charge on your own may get you the maximum sentence; find a white collar lawyer in your area to prevent that from happening.
