Hate Crime statistics
Hate crimes are a bias against a particular religion, race, ethnic/national origin, sexual orientation, or mental or physical disability. Each year the Federal Bureau of Investigation releases its annual report on hate crime statistics. In 2006 there were 7,722 hate crimes reported, which is an 8 percent increase from 2005. Two thousand six hundred and forty were anti-black hate crimes, which was up from two thousand six hundred and thirty from 2005. Nine hundred and sixty seven were hate crimes against Jews, which was up from eight hundred and forty eight in 2005. Eight hundred and ninety were hate crimes against white people, which were up from eight hundred and twenty eight in 2005. Seven hundred and forty seven were anti male homosexual hate crimes, which were up from six hundred and twenty one in 2005. Five hundred and seventy six were hate crimes against Hispanics, up from five hundred and twenty two in 2005. One hundred and fifty six were hate crimes against Islamic, up from one hundred and twenty eight in 2005. And one hundred and sixty three were anti female homosexual, up from one hundred and fifty five in 2005. Hate crimes committed in 2006 outnumbered crimes against property, the numbers being four thousand three hundred and seventy eight to three thousand five hundred and ninety three. The hate crimes against the people were serious. Six people were raped, three were killed, and eight hundred and sixty were the subject of aggravated assault, while one thousand four hundred and forty seven were subjects of simple assault. There were over two thousand people who were physically intimidated to the point where police involvement was required and charges filed. On the intimidation charges, one thousand three hundred and fifty six were committed by white people and two hundred and fifteen by blacks. Because the criminal incidents often involve multiple offenses the numbers of offenses are actually higher than these figures. In regards to crimes against property, there were one hundred and fifty five burglaries, and one hundred and forty two robberies, and two thousand nine hundred and eleven crimes of destruction, vandalism, and damage, which is often equally traumatic to victims. Of the over seven thousand hate crimes committed in 2006, fifty one percent were racially motivated, nineteen percent were motivated by religious bias, and more than fifteen percent was the result of sexual orientation bias. In the report released by the FBI, it said that thirty one percent of hate crimes occurred near or in residences or homes.
