A felony crime, which requires the expertise of a felony attorney, is considered to be, but not limited to: arson, illegal drug sales/abuse, grand theft, treason, robbery, rape, aggravated assault, burglary, tax evasion, racketeering, rape, fraud, kidnapping, espionage, battery, and/or embezzlement.

The sentence given if convicted of a felony charge can include one or more of the following penalties:

  • Probation
  • Incarceration in a jail or prison
  • Community service
  • Rehabilitation
  • Compensatory or punitive fines

The sentence is handed down by the judge who has presided over the criminal trial. In certain states a felony sentence is made in what is called determinant sentence statutes. Meaning, the legal statutes mandate that specific felony crimes receive the prescribed sentence. While in other cases, the judge is granted more discretion for determining a felony sentence.

If you have been charged with a felony you need to hire an experienced and aggressive felony attorney who will fight to defend your rights and freedom. It is important to pick an attorney that practices criminal law. What you don’t want is a white collar lawyer when faced with a felony charge.

Be wary of any attorney who guarantees you a specific result, especially if he/she has yet to evaluate your case. In this instance it is in your best interest to find a different attorney. When it comes to criminal law each case is unique and therefore there are no guaranteed results. A felony charge is not a small matter as both the charge and outcome will have an effect on your future. It is for this reason that you want experience fighting for you.
