What is the Criminal Justice System?

The criminal justice system is a complicated and multifaceted system geared toward maintaining social control, deterring criminals from committing criminal activities, controlling crime rates, and punishing those who violate the law with penalties that are set out by the criminal justice system.  The criminal justice system is composed of a variety of agencies, but the main agencies responsible for regulating the criminal justice system are the courts, attorneys, jails, prisons, and law enforcement.  The criminal justice system works together like a factory, in that all areas are necessary in order for it to work properly.  Without one part of the criminal justice system functioning at its best the system is at risk for failing.

 

Three Parts to the Criminal Justice System

The criminal justice system is a three point system that contains all areas of the system itself and carries out the laws and consequences for breaking those laws.  Policing and monitoring, the court system, and the corrections division all make up the three separate parts of the criminal justice system that flow smoothly to create an environment that is for the better of the public.  The policing and monitoring system mostly contains law enforcement in the sense of police officers, those responsible for watching for criminal activity and making the arrests when someone commits a crime.  Their goal in the criminal justice system is to keep the public safe from criminals and to fairly investigate each situation.  The court system serves the purpose to dispute and settle criminal charges. 

The goal of the court system is to take a neutral approach to cases and to determine which party is at fault and which party is the victim.  The court system takes into account not only the evidence gathered, but the criminal, their history, and their risk factors before determining a proper sentence.  Once a sentence is set the corrections department of the criminal justice system carries out the punishment.  The corrections department includes the jails and prisons where guilty criminals are held to carry out their sentence.  The corrections departments also include rehabilitative programs such as drug programs, anger management, and other specialized programs that are geared toward specific trouble areas.  All three sections of the criminal justice system are equally as important as the others, and their functionality is interdependent on one another, making it crucial for all individual parts to work in conjunction with the others.
